Death toll from Indonesia's tsunami tops 281

24 December

Indonesian authorities say the death toll from Saturday's tsunami has topped 281.They say the tsunami has left 281 people dead, 1,016 others injured, and 57 missing on the islands of Java and Sumatra. The authorities say the death toll may rise further, as the full extent of the damage remains unknown.

Early on Monday, soldiers started a search for missing people around collapsed buildings near the coast in Pandeglang, western Java.

Rescue workers in some areas are said to be sifting through debris manually because there is not enough heavy machinery.Indonesian authorities have moved residents away from the coastal areas. They say another tsunami may hit, as a volcano in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra remains active.Experts suspect Saturday's tsunami was triggered by landslides caused by the volcano's eruption.
