Powerful quake rocks central Indonesia, not potential for tsunami

Jakarta 22 January

A shallow undersea quake measuring 6.7 Richter scale struck off East Nusa Tenggara province of central Indonesia on Tuesday, but there was no tsunami alert issued and no initial reports of damages, meteorology and geophysics agency said.

The strong quake is classified as the mainshock of a series of quake striking off the province earlier on Tuesday and the previous 6.2 magnitude quake and two others quake with magnitude of 5.2 are ascribed as fore shocks, official in charge at the agency Priyo Budi told Xinhua over phone.

The jolts of the mainshock were also felt in nearby West Nusa Tenggara province and Bali resort island, the official said.

The mainshock struck at 12:10 p.m. Jakarta time (0510 GMT) with epicenter at 120 km southwest Sumba Barat district of East Nusa Tenggara province and with a depth of 10 km under sea bed, Budi said.

"Our observation on the quake, so far, there is no potential for tsunami from happening," he said.
