22 January

Taliban militants have rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into a military facility in Afghanistan, killing at least 12 and injuring more than 30.

The attack took place on Monday at a training center of the National Directorate for Security, the country's intelligence agency, in Maidan Wardak province, west of the capital Kabul.

Security personnel were reportedly eating breakfast in the canteen when a military vehicle rammed into the facility and exploded.

An Afghan government official told NHK there were unconfirmed reports that more than 40 people were killed. The death toll is expected to rise.

The Taliban has been taking part in peace talks with the US government since last summer. Washington continues to deploy its troops in Afghanistan as the militants ramp up attacks against government facilities.
