Ngape, 14 August
Farmers in Ngape Township, Magway Region, have planted 651 acres of peanuts so far this season, nearing the target of 677 acres, according to the Township Agriculture Department.
The peanuts are being grown using water from the Mannchaung Reservoir, Yenshee Dam, and local ponds. Planting began in June, with 369 acres of Magway-16, 281 acres of Ton Thani, and 1 acre of Vietnam variety already cultivated.
Farmers are being guided to use high-yield varieties with good germination rates and to follow proper farming practices, including herbicide use and pest control. An additional 325 acres are planned to meet the full target.
Last year, 677 acres were planted in the township, producing an average of 57.58 bushels per acre. Expanding peanut farming helps ensure local cooking oil supply and keeps market prices stable.— Ma Yu (Ngape)
