The Agriculture Department encouraged growers to grow monsoon paddy, wheat and other crops again in flood-stricken regions before the season ends.

Some monsoon paddy, wheat and other crops were damaged by extreme rainfall and strong winds. As the season of monsoon paddy and late monsoon long-staple wheat has not ended, staff are called for to entice growers to re-cultivate them.

Therefore, the department has reserved seeds. It is willing to cooperate with growers. It has issued guidelines to redevelop damaged farmland triggered by floods.

Myanmar’s farmers are yearly affected by natural disasters, losing their assets and crops. A thousand acres of paddy fields are damaged.

Growers are instructed to reserve paddy seeds (high-yielding Manawthuka, Sinthuka, Sinthwelat, Theehtetyin, Shwethweyin, IR 747, 90-day short matured variety, Pyi Myanmar Sein, Yadanatoe, Hnankauk, Thukayin) in flood-prone areas, nurse crops in high-land areas broadcast seeding or directly scattering pedigree seeds in 10-14 days flood-hit fields (one basket per acre), adopt Dapog, Raised Bed and SRI Tray methods in 14-30 days flood-hit areas, treat farmlands after clearing weeds or intercrop more crops with leaving six-feet space between plants, plant seeds right after harvesting 30-40 days crops to maximize grain and yields (only 120-45 days old fields) and restore damaged paddy fields.

For land treatment and preparation, using tractors to help clear debris, plough and harrow land faster, applying natural fertilizer or husks to the soil in flood-stricken areas and preparing current and irrigation channels in fields must be undertaken.

Growers are prompted to protect broadcasted seeds from the dangers of rodents and birds, relocate farmlands and grow the crops in time with a large labour force, use tractors to grow seedlings and clear weeds and apply 50-kilogramme pearl fertilizer and three bags of natural fertilizer/ soil per acre effectively before blossoming and putting 112 pounds of natural calcium sulphate per acre for soil amendment and improvement. — NN/KK
