Kawkareik, 8 August

Continuous heavy rainfall has led to flooding in Kawkareik Township, Karen State. As a result of severe creek erosion, the Pwintlin Nyinya Bridge in Kawkareik collapsed at around 6:00 a.m. this morning.

The bridge, which measures 22 feet in width, 150 feet in length, and stood 12 feet high, connected the riverside roads of Ward No. (3), and Ward No. (1). Due to erosion caused by the rising creek, the structure gave way and sank approximately 30 feet into the ground, causing the bridge to become totally destroyed.

Originally built as a temporary wooden bridge, it was donated in 2002 by Myaing Gyi Ngu Sayadaw. The estimated damage is valued at around 60 million kyats.— District IPRD
