ONLINE scams and gambling activities have become a significant threat to Myanmar’s peace, stability, the rule of law, and the security of citizens’ social and economic well-being. Recognizing the seriousness of these threats, the government is actively implementing measures to detect, prevent, and eliminate such activities not only within the country but also in border areas. Authorities are currently taking vigorous legal action against criminal groups and individuals involved in these offences.
gainst criminal groups and individuals involved in these offences. These online scams and gambling schemes are not confined to Myanmar; they are widespread across the globe. The Myanmar government is working diligently to combat these activities while collaborating with neighbouring countries and international partners to ensure a coordinated approach. In today’s era of advanced technology, criminals and unscrupulous individuals exploit the extensive use of online platforms across political, economic, and social sectors worldwide for personal gain.
In Myanmar’s border regions, foreign nationals have been found illegally residing and engaging in criminal activities, including online gambling and fraud. Relevant authorities are investigating these cases, identifying the individuals involved, and systematically transferring them to their respective countries according to legal procedures and established protocols.
Some unethical Myanmar businesspeople have also established online gambling websites, sending messages on social media and broadcasting conspicuous advertisements to attract participants. Law enforcement agencies of the government have been actively identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting these operators. Recently, authorities successfully arrested agents and operators involved in online gambling in several townships in Yangon and Mandalay Regions.
These gambling systems are designed to favour operators rather than players, ensuring that participants inevitably face losses. Many individuals who participate in such schemes end up losing substantial amounts of family money and assets. Likewise, some young citizens seeking employment for their livelihoods were recruited to work in online gambling operations. Hence, they were involved in these criminal activities and eventually faced legal consequences. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, their involvement caused harm to society and violated the law.
As the government continues to combat online fraud and gambling as a matter of national responsibility, parents and guardians also play a crucial role in ensuring that their children are not drawn into such criminal activities. Citizens who become aware of gangs or groups conducting online scams or gambling are urged to report them confidentially to the relevant security authorities. Such cooperation will help reduce criminal activity, protect communities, and maintain national security throughout the country.
