Two successive typhoons that recently hit Tokyo's Hachijojima Island damaged at least 200 homes.

Typhoon Halong passed over the Izu island chain in the Pacific, which includes Hachijojima, last week. Many houses in Hachijo Town suffered damage, including some that had their roofs blown off.

As officials were assessing the destruction from Halong, another one, Typhoon Nakri, struck the town on Monday.

They have yet to assess the full extent of the damage, but as of Tuesday, they estimated that the homes of about 220 residents were damaged.

Town authorities say they began application procedures for certificates to help people claim public support in the event of natural disasters.

Officials say they will speed up the survey, and are considering using municipal housing for typhoon victims. They will begin consultations at the town hall starting Wednesday for those wishing to apply for housing aid.
