READING can systematically improve knowledge and skills, as well as develop critical thinking. Although reading is a simple activity, in this rapidly advancing technological age, traditional book reading and online reading are becoming competitors. As a result, parents and guardians are facing challenges in cultivating reading habits in children.
Developing reading skills in childhood is an important part of a child’s growth. Reading skills typically build upon speaking skills. To begin reading literature, children need to have reached a certain level of physical development and mental readiness. Therefore, parents should provide age-appropriate books, assist their children in reading, and take part in the reading process to show interest and encouragement.
Reading helps children develop language skills, critical thinking, rationality, better concentration, and also enhances their politeness and moral values. However, many parents are facing challenges due to their children’s digital addiction. Children who become addicted to digital devices often struggle to control their use of mobile phones, tablets, video games, social media, and other digital tools. Without proper guidance, they may suffer from depression, anxiety, mental health issues, and may become disappointed or resentful toward their parents.
Generally, Myanmar children are not yet mature enough to resist the attraction of social media and advanced digital devices, as they lack sufficient technological knowledge and the ability to distinguish right from wrong in the digital world due to limited access to technology. As a result, excessive use of digital devices may negatively affect their brain development, mental health, and social relationships.
According to some surveys on digital addiction, children are becoming less interested in school education. Their behaviour is gradually becoming more detached from the natural world. A 2022 study by Common Sense Media reported that 64 per cent of children under eight years old spend more than two hours of screen time per day. Additionally, a 2021 UNICEF press release confirmed that children who have prolonged screen time are more likely to experience increased stress.
As such, parents should encourage their children to read literary works to open their minds and hearts. This will help children develop stronger critical thinking skills, guiding them toward success in life. Parents need to nurture the habit of reading from an early age. Moreover, they should choose appropriate books, interestingly discuss the topics their children have read with their children, and limit screen time as part of responsibly shaping their children’s future.
