ACCORDING to the Myanmar Motion Pictures Organization, the historic Wazira Cinema in Kyauktada Township, Yangon Region, will be restored in line with its original architectural design.

After the government upgrades the Wazira Cinema to a Red Carpet Theatre, the venue will not only continue to operate as a cinema but will also serve as a space for stage plays, theatrical performances, puppet shows, dance and music events, discussions, meetings, training sessions, studios, and other artistic creations.

“We are planning to complete the renovation work of the Wazira Cinema by the second week of March 2026. Wazira is a century-old cinema where film, theatre, and music artistes have, across generations, entertained the public through films and performances,” said an official from the Myanmar Motion Pictures Organization.

Located at 327, Bogyoke Aung San Road, Kyauktada Township, Yangon, the Wazira Cinema was originally built in 1923. The building, adorned with Beaux-Arts architectural designs blending styles from the 16th to 18th centuries and decorated with sculptures and reliefs, is regarded as a landmark that deserves to be preserved with pride as part of Myanmar’s cinematic heritage. — ASH/KNN
