IKO Myanmar (International Karate Organization Myanmar) launched the International Karate Organization-IKO Weright Category Championship at MCC Hall in Yangon yesterday, featuring various categories for men and women fighters.
“The championship is intended chance for above 18-year-old fighters. This competition started in 1989 until 1996, the competition has been held twice or thrice a year. Later on, there were some difficulties, and the last competition was held in 2012 and 2018. It resumed again in 2023. From here, the players who won at the junior level are preparing to compete in Japan. Those winners are prepared to go to Japan and compete in more championships. The competition has gained momentum. We will do our best to make it convenient where we can’t get a field for the tourney,” said Shihan U Min Lwin who is a chairman of the International Karate Organization Myanmar.
Athletes competed in the men’s 60-kilo and 70-kilo events and women’s 50-, 55- and above 55-kilo events. The IKO karate tournament was held from 1989 to 2008 and resumed in 2023. — Bala Soe/KZL
