An event marking the International Day of Midwife was celebrated at a public hospital in Pekhon, Southern Shan State on 12 May.

The ceremony was organized by the Shan State Nurse and Midwife Association. The ceremony was opened by trainees from a midwifery school in Taunggyi by singing a song. Firstly, an official from the of the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department gave a speech and an assistant director from the Department of Public Health read out a message sent by the President of the Myanmar Nurse and Midwife Association Professor Daw Yin Mya.

Then the principal of the midwifery school (Taunggyi) Daw Khin Moe Thu and an instructor talked about the activities of the midwives and a representative spoke words of gratitude on behalf of the nurses and midwives. The event was also attended by regional lawmakers, the township administrator, departmental staff, members of the township municipality and local people.—Ko Htwe (Pekhon)
