Health authorities in the Gaza Strip said on Monday that Israeli attacks on a hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis killed at least 20 people, including medical workers and journalists.
Local authorities announced that the Nasser Hospital, the only functioning public hospital in the southern Gaza Strip, had been attacked by Israel's military.
The deceased include four journalists who worked for media outlets, such as the Reuters news agency and Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera. They said this brought the number of journalists killed since the conflict began in October 2023 to 244.
An Arab media outlet reported that Israeli forces fired a second missile "deliberately" at reporters and first responders who had gathered at the site of a first attack.
The Israeli military admitted to carrying out a strike in the area of the hospital. It released a statement saying that it instructed officers to conduct an initial inquiry.
The Israeli military has yet to reveal why it carried out the strikes. An Israeli media outlet reported the aim of the attacks was to disable a surveillance camera set up by Hamas on the roof of the hospital, citing a security source.
