The more than 180-year-old Bagaya Kyaung (monastery) located in Inwa region, Tada-U Township, Mandalay Region, is currently crowded with local and foreign tourists.
“The wooden monastery was constructed over 180 years ago. A number of local and foreign travellers as well as students are visiting the monastery every day. The monastery is more crowded on the weekends. Students visit Bagaya Kyaung to explore its architecture and the artwork of ancient Myanmar artists. The monastery was constructed during the reign of an ancient king and is full of interesting things in terms of cultural heritage, rare ancient architecture, sculptures, statues, and pillars. On account of this, it has become a famous tourist attraction in Myanmar,” said a local from Inwa.
The Bagaya monastery was built in the 1196 Myanmar Era during the reign of King Bagyidaw. It is supported by 267 teak posts, measuring 60ft in height and 9ft in circumference. The monastery measures an imposing 188 feet in length and 103 feet in width.
Five brick stairs have been constructed around the monastery, and it has been decorated with many ancient floral and animal motifs. —Than Zaw Min (IPRD)
