REPAIR and conservation work on the wall paintings at Kyaiklat Chaung Pagoda and Tilawkaguru Cave, located on Sagaing Hill in Sagaing Region, which sustained partial damage during the Mandalay earthquake, has now been completed, according to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture.
The conservation works were reportedly carried out using donations contributed by the public to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum for the preservation of these ancient mural paintings.
The mural paintings at Kyaiklat Chaung Pagoda are regarded as some of the finest examples of wall art from the Pinya period, while those at Tilawkaguru Cave represent outstanding mural works from the Nyaungyan period.
Tilawkaguru Cave, constructed in 1034 Myanmar Era (17th century AD), features remarkable Nyaungyan-era murals. The cave’s ceiling is decorated with a lotus motif, and at the entrance to the Gandakuti chamber, an illustration of the Buddha’s footprint can also be seen. — ASH/KZL
