16 OCTOBER 2025

A Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Industry Dr Charlie Than, who is also Patron of the Myanmar Engineering Council, attended the General Assembly of World Federation of Engineering Organizations and Global Engineering Congress held in Shanghai, China, from 12 to 17 October.

On 13 October, the Union minister attended the opening ceremony of the assembly and made a remark saying Green Engineering is more than just a specialized field, as it serves as a moral compass for harmonizing humanity and nature. The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has significantly supported the development of Myanmar engineers, and with the backing of CAST and Asia-Pacific engineering associations, the Myanmar Engineering Council became a permanent member of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) in 2018, gaining recognition under the Washington Accord and other regional accreditation standards. He also added that the future of engineering education should focus not on machines but on meaningful public contributions, with investments toward developing the mindset and intellect of young people in addition to labs and research departments. Therefore, engineering is not a competition with the use of resources but taking responsibility to transform expectation into practical action.

On 14 October, the Union minister made an opening speech titled " Transformative Power of Information and Communication Technologies" at the Information and Communication Technology Forum of Global Engineering Congress.

This year's theme was Engineering Shapes a Green Future, and the congress was jointly organized by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WEFO), China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Chinese Academy of Engineering and Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The congress will focus on the pivotal role of engineering technologies in addressing climate change, fostering green economic growth, shaping a globally sustainable and human-centred development framework, and enhancing human well-being. It aims to contribute to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. — MNA/ KTZH
