MYANMAR and Egypt discussed the development of the agricultural sec­tor yesterday via videoconference. The discussion was attended by Mrs Aya Saad Mohamed Abdelkarim, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Myanmar and Direc­tor-General Dr Thanda Kyi from the Planning Department on behalf of the Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and the di­rectors-general, along with officials of the Agriculture Department, Agri­cultural Mechanization Department, Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department and Fisheries Depart­ment.

 

The two sides discussed to im­plement agricultural cooperation between the two countries at the 8th Cairo Water Week to be held in Cairo, Egypt, from 12 to 16 October, including the signing of a MoU on agricultural cooperation between the two countries, export of fertilizer and pesticides, fruits and vegetables, potatoes, orange, beverages, and flavorings for processed foods from Egypt, the export of rice, groundnut oil, maize, coffee beans, tea, fish, and shrimp from Myanmar to Egypt, pro­moting government-to-government cooperation, increasing direct co­operation between private compa­nies and businesspeople from both countries to promote trade, rising investment in mechanized farming systems, exchange of agricultural technologies, penetration of My­anmar’s rice into foreign markets, technical assistance (cultivation and cotton seeds) for the cotton and pota­to sectors, the trial cultivation of new varieties from Egypt in Myanmar and joint research between experts from both sides. — MNA/MKKS
