ACCORDING to the Myanmar Pineapple Growers and Exporters Association, arrangements are being made to export over 40,000 tonnes of Myanmar pineapples abroad during the 2025-2026 financial year.

Myanmar pineapples are cultivated across the country. In the past, they were grown mainly for domestic consumption, but in recent years, cultivation has shifted towards production for export markets.

“This year, we are planning to export more than 40,000 tonnes of pineapples. High-quality pineapples such as those from Hsipaw will be exported, with the majority destined for China,” said a responsible official from the association.

At present, more than 20,000 acres of pineapples are under cultivation domestically, with the largest areas in Shan State and Kachin State. Pineapples, especially high-quality pineapples from Shan State, are mainly exported to China.

Among the cultivated areas nationwide, plantations in Shan State (North) alone produce on average between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes of quality pineapples annually.

Across Myanmar’s pineapple-growing regions, there are two main types of farms – local GAP farms and organic farms. Cultivation and production methods from China, Thailand and Sri Lanka are also being applied. As a result, varieties of pineapples with quality suited to penetrating international markets are mainly being cultivated. — ASH/KNN
