THE Labour Ministers’ Meeting between Laos and Myanmar was held at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Vientiane, Laos, yesterday.

It was attended by Union Minister for Labour U Myint Naung, the director-general and officials of the Department of Labour Relations, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Lao PDR Madame Baykham Khattiya and relevant officials.

Speaking at the event, the Union minister highlighted the role of migrant workers as a workforce resource of a nation and participants in developing economy and social status of their native country and host countries, and MoU to set fundamental principles and practices for labour affairs to contribute to cooperation between two countries in upgrading skills of labour, employment, social security, labour protection and technological sectors, especially in labour affairs.

Then, during the sharing session on Myanmar labour affairs and socioeconomic development, the Union minister explained the priority given to State stability and development while conducting democratic transition processes in Myanmar, efforts to promote agriculture, manufacturing and service sectors, enactment of the Overseas Employment Law and plans to amend the law, first and second five-year Myanmar National Plan of Action on International Labour Migration and appointment of labour attachés in South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan to assist the Myanmar migrant workers. The two Ministers also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation and signed the MoU on labour cooperation between the two countries. — MNA/KTZH
