11 OCTOBER 2025

A commemorative ceremony for the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was held at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, attended the event and made a speech, highlighting the theme of the event “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters”

He added that the country faced K7,979 billion losses after the Mandalay earthquake that occurred on 28 March 2025, and the emergency response and rehabilitation activities were conducted under the guidance of the Head of State and close supervision of the National Disaster Management Committee. As Myanmar ranks eighth among the ten most vulnerable countries according to the global risk index, it is extremely important to continuously prioritize and implement disaster risk reduction activities. In building disaster resilience, not only the government and the private sector but also all development and humanitarian organizations must work to reduce losses and damages by increasing their investment in disaster risk reduction initiatives.

A video message of UN Secretary-General Mr Antonio Guterres and a video clip on Myanmar’s efforts for disaster reduction were screened. Winners of the commemorative competitions were awarded during the event. The Union Minister and party observed around the commemorative photo booth. — MNA/KTZH
