MYANMAR exported over 55,900 metric tonnes of fish with an estimated value of US$64.2 million in the first quarter of the current FY 2025-2026 beginning 1 April, according to the De­partment of Fisheries.

 

Myanmar exported over $44 million worth of 31,700 metric tonnes of fish by sea, while $19.89 million valued over 24,200 metric tonnes of fish were sent to neighbouring countries at the borders. Myanmar’s fish export reached over 61,300 metric tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous financial year (2024-2025), generat­ing over $69.4 million. The export volume is down by over 5,450 tonnes of fish worth $5.197 million com­pared to that of the same period last FY.

 

Myanmar bagged over $421 million from about 400,000 tonnes of fish exports in the 2024- 2025 FY (April-March), ac­cording to the Department of Fisheries.

 

Myanmar steadily ex­ports seafood to 40 coun­tries, including China, Thailand, Bangladesh and Japan through maritime and border trade chan­nels.

 

More than 20 fish species, including hilsa, rohu, catfish, and seabass, are conveyed to foreign markets, according to the Myanmar Fisheries Fed­eration.

 

There are over 140 cold-storage seafood pro­cessing factories in My­anmar. The Department of Fisheries processes a licence renewal yearly. — NN/KK
