THE moment of the first supermoon for 2025 was visible in Myanmar on 7 October, the Myanmar Astronomy and Science Enthusiasts Society (MASES) said on 7 October.

The supermoon or full moon, technically named perigee, occurs when the Moon comes closest to the Earth in its orbit. The distance from the Earth always varies due to the elliptical orbit, about 23855 miles on average. In this supermoon moment, the distance from the Earth to the Moon is 224,559 miles, it said.

When a supermoon occurs, the distance between the Earth and the Moon seems closer and looks 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon.

The supermoon, which was visible on 7 October, is the first for 2025, and three consecutive supermoons will occur in November and December 2025.

With the view of the lighting festival of Thadingyut, the sky will be unusually brighter and the first supermoon will be visible at its best from Myanmar, said MASES. Saturn was bright together with the Moon on 6 October, had a chance to see the view, it added. — MT/ZS
