Mongnai, 26 August
Farmers in Mongnai Township, Namhsan District, Shan State (South), have begun harvesting their peanut crops, planted earlier in April and May. A total of 440 acres of rain-fed peanuts were cultivated, including seed-producing and clean-sowing plots.
Under the guidance of the Township Agriculture Department, test plots using improved peanut varieties such as Simpadetha-11 and Makwe-16 showed increased yields this season. “Last year we produced over 52 baskets per acre, and this year we reached over 65 baskets in the seed fields,” said U Zaw Maw Oo, head of the department.
The improved seeds will be redistributed to expand high-yield cultivation in the coming season.— Myo Nyunt Shwe (Mongnai)
