Pwintbyu, 5 September

Pwintbyu Township in the Magway Region has announced plans to cultivate 127,937 acres of crops during the upcoming winter season, utilizing water from the Mezali irrigation system, according to the Township Agriculture Department.

The initiative aims to boost local food security and increase farmers’ incomes. Planting is scheduled to begin in October, with efforts focused on achieving the target acreage for each crop. The Agriculture Department is collaborating with relevant departments to ensure smooth operations and promote the cultivation of high-yielding crop varieties suited to the region’s conditions.

Water resources for both cultivation and crop production have been confirmed as adequate. The Ministry of Agriculture will support the project by providing technical assistance to improve farming methods and help expand the area under cultivation.

The winter cropping plan includes a diverse range of crops, totaling 127,937 acres, as follows: Maize: 3,050 acres, various beans: 72,564 acres, Sesame: 34,951 acres, Chicken fruit: 2,438 acres, Cattle feed: 12,909 acres, Vegetables: 1,745 acres and other crops.

“If farmers can achieve good yields, they will not only enhance local food security but also generate income and improve their socio-economic status through the sale of surplus crops. Therefore, continuous efforts to expand cultivation year after year are essential,” said an official from the Township Agriculture Department.— Hlaing Win Lay (Pwintbyu Myay)
