Severe Tropical Storm Krosa could approach Japan's Kanto region, including Tokyo on Saturday. Weather officials are warning of high waves and risks from heavy rain.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the storm was located east of Hachijojima island far off the Kanto region as of Friday noon.

Krosa is moving north at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Weather officials say it may develop further as it progresses at a relatively slow pace.

Gusty winds and heavy rain are expected on Hachijojima Island and other areas in Kanto on Saturday. The areas may see up to 100 millimeters of rain through Saturday morning.

Officials are urging the public to stay on alert for high waves, mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.
