A ceremony was held yesterday at No­votel Yangon Max Hotel to honour the Myanmar women’s national football team, who finished second at the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship. The team received a total of US$80,000 and K523 million in prize money.

 

During the ceremony, highlights of the team’s performance through­out the tournament were screened. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs and for Hotels and Tourism Jeng Phang Naw Taung delivered a congratulatory speech, followed by the presentation of US$80,000 by the Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Extra priz­es were awarded by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, Myanmar Football Federation President U Zaw Zaw, and other donors. The total prize money of US$80,000 and K523 million was formally handed over to the team members, coaching staff, and officials. Top scorer Win Theingi Tun expressed her gratitude on video, while team captain Khin Marlar Tun also thanked the organizers.

 

From 6 to 19 August, the Myanmar women’s team competed in Vietnam at the ASEAN Women’s Championship, showcasing strong performances to secure the second place. The team defeated Australia 2-1 and Timor-Leste 3-0 in the group stage, drew 1-1 with the Philippines, and finished top of their group with seven points. In the semifinals, they beat Thailand 2-1 but were narrowly defeated by Australia in the final, earning the runner-up position. Along with the second-place award, Win Theingi Tun received the top scorer title with seven goals, while Myo Mya Mya Nyein was named the best goalkeeper. This marked the team’s return to the final after ten years, adding to their record of two championships, four runner-up fin­ishes, and three third-place finishes. — Thaw Lay/KZL
