A workshop titled ‘Understand­ing Myanmar’s International Boundary’ was held at the Lawkanat Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw, on 27-28 August 2025. During the opening ceremony, U Than Swe, Union Minister for For­eign Affairs, delivered opening remarks. In his address, he emphasized the significance of boundary matters, noting that they constitute a crucial representation of state sover­eignty. He also stressed the im­portance of efficient and effec­tive boundary management to safeguard sovereignty, national integrity, security and stability, as well as to promote peaceful coexistence with neighbouring countries.

 

Also, present on the occa­sion were U Naing Min Kyaw, Deputy Foreign Minister, Per­manent Secretary of the Min­istry of Foreign Affairs, and senior officials from relevant Ministries. The workshop was attended by around 100 rep­resentatives from the various Ministries and Departments, in­cluding the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Minis­try of Transport and Communi­cations, Ministry of Foreign Af­fairs, as well as representatives from Myanmar Embassies and Consulates-General located in neighbouring countries.

 

The first day of the work­shop focused on the discussion regarding Myanmar’s Land Boundary. Experts and repre­sentatives from the Department of Water Resources and River Development of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Myanmar Naval Hydrographic Centre of the Myanmar Navy, General Administration De­partment of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Boundary Division of the Consular and Legal Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Survey Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conserva­tions participated in the panel sessions. In addition, the My­anmar Ambassador to Kuwait, Minister Counsellor at the My­anmar Embassy in Kuwait and Chargé d’Affaires ad interim/ Minister at the Myanmar Em­bassy in Pretoria joined the discussions via online as pan­ellists.

 

The second day of the workshop will be dedicated to discussions on Myanmar’s Maritime Boundary. Experts from the Department of Marine Administration of the Ministry of Transport and Communica­tions, Myanmar Naval Hydro­graphic Centre, International Law and Legal Division of the Consular and Legal Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Legal Affairs, and Ministry of Education will share their in­sights and expertise on matters relating to the maritime bound­ary. Chargé d’Affaires ad inter­im/Minister at the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore will also contribute to the discussions online as a panellist. — MNA
