Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn announced Myanmar’s ambition to enter the global coffee market and become a coffee-exporting country. He highlighted the establishment of a central body on 10 May 2022 for coffee value chain development and the formation of the Myanmar Coffee Export Promotion Task Force by relevant ministries and departments to promote Myanmar’s coffee globally, expand coffee plantations, and develop the coffee value chain.

Additionally, the Union minister invited collaboration in knowledge and technique exchange with Myanmar coffee manufacturing entrepreneurs, noting that Dehong produces 95 per cent of coffee products in the PRC. At present, Dehong prefecture grows highland coffee plantations, whereas lowland coffee plantations were primarily cultivated before.

At the event, eight companies from Dehong displayed coffee seeds, coffee powder, instant coffee mix, and dried tea leaves. Union Minister U Tun Ohn also encouraged Dehong companies to participate in exhibitions alongside Myanmar private businesses.
