DURING the six-month period from 24 May to 14 November 2025, the Northern Indian Ocean saw the formation of two cyclones, three depressions, and seven low pressure areas, said meteorologist U Win Naing, citing the MMWeather site homepage.
The detailed forecasts showcased occurrences during 24-25 May - depression in the Arabian Sea; 29-30 May-deep depression in the Bay of Bengal (BOB); 14-20 July-depression in the BOB; 15-16 July- land depression over North India; 25-27 July- depression in the BOB; 18-19 August-depression in the BOB; 6-11 September-land deep depression over Northwest India and Pakistan; 26-28 September-depression in the BOB; 1-3 October-deep depression in the BOB; 1-7 October- the first cyclone “Shakti” in the Arabian Sea; 22 October - 1 November- depression in the Arabian Sea; 25-30 October-the second cyclone “Montha” in the Northern Indian Ocean which resulted in nine fatalities US$ 603 billion damage.
The upper air cyclonic circulation (UACC) currently forming in the Southern Bay of Bengal is expected to continue moving west and could intensify into a depression and the extreme weather La Niña began in October and could persist until February 2026, he also predicted. — Htun Htun/ZN
