1 dead in anti-muslim mob attacks in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan police say one person is dead after mobs targeted mosques and Muslim-owned shops in the country's northwest.

Attacks on Muslims are on the rise following last month's deadly Easter Sunday bombings, reportedly carried out by Islamic militants.

On Tuesday, the prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe inspected one of the damaged mosques.

He said, "We have given the armed services and police full power and the responsibility to control this situation."

The police have reportedly arrested 23 people in connection with the attacks. Authorities have also extended a nationwide curfew until early Wednesday morning.

A state of emergency is still in effect nationwide after suicide bombers targeted three churches and three luxury hotels in April, killing more than 250 people.
