1,361 flee cyclone Eta in Costa Rica, 2 missing

At least 1,361 people were evacuated to 41 shelters in 16 cantons in Costa Rica, fleeing heavy rains caused by tropical depression Eta, as rescue teams searched for two missing men, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) said Thursday.

The president of the CNE, Alexander Solis, said in the last 12 hours, his agency received more than 300 reports of landslides, flooding and other rain-related incidents.

"We have 127 reports of landslides," Solis said.

The missing men were in a house that was buried by a landslide in Agua Buena of Coto Brus, in the southeast of the country.

"Apparently there are two people trapped, one 50 years old and the other 60. Those are the reports neighbors at the site are giving us, it has not been confirmed, but the authorities are doing everything necessary to enter," he said.

Costa Rica expects the impact of tropical depression Eta, which is currently over Honduras, to extend until Friday.
