44 dead as bus plunges off Indian mountain road

A bus carrying more than 60 passengers has plunged off a mountain road in northern India, killing at least 44 of them.

The accident occurred in the state of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.

Police say the bus tumbled about 300 meters. Rescue personnel are searching for people thrown out of the vehicle, including its driver.

The accident site is a moderate curve with no guardrails. The road has no traces of braking. Police suspect the braking system of the bus was faulty or that the driver made a mistake in steering.

The number of traffic accidents has been high in India as its economic growth has allowed more people to buy cars. The country marked the world's largest number of deaths in traffic accidents in 2017 at around 150,000.

People are calling for measures to improve road safety, such as setting up guardrails and street lights.
