5 rescued, 1 missing after boat sinks near Rakhine State capital

Five people were rescued and one other reported missing after a boat sank in the Kywede River in Sittwe Township, Rakhine State, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.


The boat measuring 39 ft. in length, 9 ft. in width, and 3 ft. in draught and carrying construction materials such as corrugated iron sheets and slabs was operated by a man named Kan Htoo Chay, 50, from Yay Chan Pyin Village together with five people aboard. The overloaded boat sank about 200 yards from Yay Chan Pyin Jetty while travelling to Angumaw Jetty.


Nearby boats rescued five people including the boat operator from the sunken boat but one man went missing in the incident. Action has been taken against the boat operator by the local police.
