62 migrants drown off Mauritania

At least 62 migrants were killed after their boat sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel was heading to Europe from West Africa.

The boat sank in waters off the coast near the Mauritanian city of Nouadhibou on Wednesday.

The International Organization for Migration quoted survivors as saying that the ship was carrying about 150 migrants from Gambia and Senegal.

The boat, which set sail from Gambia on November 27 for Spain's Canary Islands, ran out of fuel before it sank. Eighty-five people swam to shore.

The waters off Mauritania are used by refugees and migrants from West Africa, who are trying to enter Europe via the Canary Islands. But many have died or gone missing after their boats sank or encountered other difficulties.
