70 houses torched by forest fire in Minbu

Minbu, 13 February

A forest fire has reportedly destroyed about 70 houses in Ohpyinmel Village, Minbu Township in Magway Region at about 5 p.m. on 12 February.

The fire started from a cowshed belonging to an odd-job worker identified as U Toke Paw, southwest of Ohpyinmel Village after the sparks from the forest fire reached to the corral. The blaze spread to nearby houses, consuming 69 houses in the villages. A group of firefighters led by Assistant Director U Tun Tun in joining hands with policemen, village administrators, and local people attempted to completely extinguish the flames by using eight fire engines, and water tankers.

An estimated loss of property due to the fire is more than Ks. 10 million, said an official from the local fire brigade. Ohpyinmel Village consists of about 180 houses.—Kyaw Soe Win (Minbu)
