8 gold miners rescued in Zimbabwe

17 February

Rescue workers in Zimbabwe have pulled eight gold miners out of a tunnel that became flooded after a nearby dam collapsed on Tuesday, following heavy rain.

Between 60 and 70 miners are believed to be trapped about 100 meters underground.

Rescuers have been pumping water out of the mine, which is in Battlefields, but continuing rain is hindering their efforts.

The miners are believed to have been operating illegally in the disused mine.

Illegal mining is prevalent in Zimbabwe. The country's rich natural resources are an important source of foreign currency.—NHK
