28 February

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has expressed hope that the US-North Korea summit will have a positive outcome that will help to achieve a nuclear-free world.

Abe told a Diet committee on Thursday that North Korea's nuclear and missile programs are a huge threat to Japan, and the government has made its stance clear to the United States.

He said the North's nuclear arsenal must be scrapped in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

Abe added that the resolution of the abductions of Japanese nationals remains a key issue for Japan.

He said he spoke to US President Donald Trump about the issue over the phone, and that he is confident Trump will convey these thoughts to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
