About 1,000 pigs have died in two village-tracts in Tachilek Township, but it is not yet known whether African swine fever was the cause of death.
The outbreak of sickness that has killed pigs started in July, and so far about 500 pigs in village of Monghe Village-tract and about 500 pigs in Bushi Village-tract in Mongphyat Township have died.
Local authorities and officials of the Tachilek Township Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department inspected sick and dead pigs yesterday.
“Local people said the pigs were infected with virus and became weak before their deaths. But, we will know the disease which killed the pigs when the results of the blood test return,” said Dr Kyaw Kyaw Soe, Assistant Director of the Tachilek Township LBVD.
The villagers did not inform the authorities about the outbreak even though it began in July, he added. The veterinarians from the department vaccinated the remaining pigs, took out blood sample from sick pigs for testing and detailed about the directives to minimize the devastation.—Myint Mo (Tachilek)
