AFF Women’s Championship: Myanmar advances to semifinal

THE Myanmar women’s national team have advanced to the semifinal of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 in spite of a 0-4 loss to Viet Nam yesterday in the last match of the group stage, according to the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF).

The goals for Viet Nam were scored by Pham Hai Yen at the 13th and 16th minutes, Thai ThiThao at the 43rd minute, and by Nguyen ThiTuyet Dung, off a penalty, at the 63rd minute.

Myanmar played three matches in the group stage, winning two and losing one. Myanmar beat Indonesia 7-0 on 16 August, and trounced Cambodia 10-1 on 18 August.

Both Viet Nam and Myanmar from Group B have advanced to the semifinals. Viet Nam is the winner in Group B, with 9 points from three wins, and Myanmar is the first runner-up, with 6 points from two wins and one loss.

The group stage matches for Group A have not finished yet. Four matches remain to be played on 21 and 23 August. At present, host Thailand is at the top of the standing table with 6 points and 17 goal differences, and Philippines is in the second place with 6 points and 10 goal differences.

The best goal scorer so far has been Myanmar’s Yee YeeOo with seven goals, followed by Viet Nam’s Huynh Nhu and Nguyen ThiBichThuy with five goals each.

The semifinals for the tourney are scheduled to be held on 25 August, and the final and third place matches will be played on 27 August. — KyawKhin
