Afghan official wants Taliban to begin ceasefire

A senior Afghan government official has called on the Taliban to begin an immediate ceasefire. The militant group has been taking part in peace talks, but continues to carry out attacks.

The Afghan government and the Taliban began peace negotiations for the first time in mid-September in an attempt to end the fighting that has continued since the 2001 terror attacks in the United States.

The chief of the National Reconciliation High Council, Abdullah Abdullah, who leads the peace negotiations with the Taliban, told local media that the fighting has escalated since the peace talks started.

A Taliban official told NHK the group does not object to including the ceasefire as a topic of the talks, but governing the country on the basis of Islamic law should also be discussed.
