Afghan presidential election campaign starts

29 July

Presidential election campaigning got underway in Afghanistan on Sunday with the focus on improving the country's security. But the day brought yet another terrorist attack this time targeting the office of a vice-presidential candidate.

A fierce contest is expected with 18 people in the race. Voting day is scheduled for September 28.

President Ashraf Ghani is seeking a second term.

Despite the candidates' promises to restore security, two civilians were killed and at least 20 were wounded on Sunday. The car bomb blast and gun attack in the capital Kabul slightly injured President Ghani's running mate.

A United Nations report says more than 3,800 civilians were killed in terrorist attacks last year alone.
