Airstrikes in Libya kill 14 children in 72 hours

Two airstrikes within 72 hours killed 14 children and injured at least 10 other civilians in Libya, said the forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Sunday.

The forces said that one airstrike carried out by the east-based rebel army on a residential neighborhood in the south of the capital Tripoli on Sunday killed five children and injured 10 other civilians, while another airstrike on Friday killed nine children and two women in the southern town Umm Al-Aranib.

The east-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign in and around Tripoli since early April, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.

The armed conflicts have injured and killed thousands of people, and displaced nearly 120,000 civilians.

Libya has been plagued by insecurity and political division since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
