In China, the Shanghai composite index temporarily fell 2.3 percent from last week's close.

As of 11:30 a.m. Japan time, the key index was down 1.8 percent.

The key indexes in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore plunged 4.1 percent.

Taiwan saw a 2.6-percent drop. The key index in Australia tumbled 6.4 percent.

Market sources say investor concerns have deepened as Italy took the rare step of restricting movement across much of its northern region and many US states have declared a state of emergency over the coronavirus.
