Australia considers accepting Saudi asylum seeker

10 January

Australia says it will consider accepting an 18-year-old Saudi woman who fled to Thailand to avoid ill treatment by her family and possible forced marriage.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun arrived over the weekend in Bangkok, where she planned to apply for asylum in Australia. She says her family may kill her if she returns.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has extended its protection.

Australian authorities said on Wednesday the UNHCR had asked them to consider accepting Qunun.

Several of Qunun's family members have arrived in Bangkok. But Thai authorities say she refuses to meet them.

Qunun's father denies that her family has abused her.
