THE Conservation Division under the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch), has announced that the Bagan World Heritage Site will be divided into 11 zones for the clearance of bushes, weeds and tree stumps around ancient monuments.
During the 2026-2027 financial year, vegetation, including weeds, bushes and tree stumps, will be cleared within 20 feet of the monuments, while thorny trees growing on top of the structures will also be removed. From July 2026, Union-funded work will begin in priority areas to systematically remove Manithanlyat trees and other deep-rooted plants using chemicals, as well as to uproot non-native desert plants growing near the monuments.
The Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch) and the Cultural Site Security Division also regularly carry out vegetation cleanup across the World Heritage Site in cooperation with district- and township-level departments in NyaungU. — ASH/MKKS
