Bangladesh dengue death toll nears 1,100

The death toll from dengue fever in Bangladesh so far this year is nearing the 1,100 mark amid the worst outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Bangladeshi government Monday confirmed another 10 deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since January to 1,096.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, the deaths include 107 in October, 396 in September, 342 in August and 204 in July.

From Oct. 1 to Oct. 9, 22,818 more dengue cases were recorded after 79,598 people were infected last month, according to DGHS.

A total of 2,660 fresh dengue cases, including 649 in Dhaka, were reported in the 24 hours till 8:00 a.m. local time Monday, DGHS data showed.

The total number of dengue fever cases reported since the start of January reached 226,224.
