The upgrade of the Bayintnaung Bridge-1, located on the Hlaing River in Yangon region, is 70-per cent complete, according to officials.
The upgrade project began on 5 October, and currently, eight of the bridge’s 12 supports have been installed.
The Bayintnaung Bridge-1 was opened in 1994, and the foundation of the bridge was laid with reinforced concrete. The bridge is 1640.83 feet long and 28 feet wide, and flanked by 6-feet-wide pedestrian walkways. The bridge can bear loads of up to 20 tons.
Among the Hlaing river crossing bridges, the Bayintnaung Bridge-1 was constructed first, followed by the Aung Zayar suspension bridge, the Shwe Pyi Thar bridge, and the Bayintnaung Bridge-2.
The upgrade of the Bayintnaung Bridge-1 would benefit the people from the Ayeyawady region and the Hlaingtharyar industry zone.
The Bayintnaung Bridge-2 was constructed about 200 ft upstream of Bayintnaung Bridge-1. Now, vehicles are crossing Hlaing river through Bayintnaung Bridge-2 as Bayintnaung Bridge-1 has been closed for upgrade.
Bayintnaung Bridge-1 is being upgraded by the Special Bridge Construction Team-3, under the Road Department of the Construction Ministry. The project is expected to be completed very soon. —Than Htaik
