Building collapse kills at least 11 in Mumbai

Officials in the Indian city of Mumbai say at least 11 people died after a four-story building collapsed on Tuesday.

Emergency workers managed to pull out survivors from the collapsed structure. But officials say about 20 people are trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operations are making slow progress because streets in the area are too narrow for heavy machinery.

The building was more than 50 years old and may have been substandard.

Another building collapse killed 33 people in the country's commercial hub in 2017.

The city authorities have been renovating or demolishing old buildings, but there are still about 500 structures at risk of falling down.

The authorities have difficulty carrying out the task because of fund shortages and a lack of new homes for residents who will need to be relocated.
