Eligible voters across Myanmar went to polling stations yesterday to cast their votes in the 2020 General Election yesterday. Many voters in Nay Pyi Taw arrived at polling stations before polling stations opened at 6 am.
Election officials and staff members, local and foreign observers, and political parties’s representatives and journalists were present to observe voting at polling stations across Myanmar. Outside the polling stations, election staff members checked the body temperature of the voters and provided KN-95 masks to them. The voters in the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory cast their ballots for eight Pyithu Hluttaw seats and two Amyotha Hluttaw seats in accordance with the COVID-19 preventive guidelines. There were 646 polling stations in the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory.
Polling stations were closed at 4 pm nationwide, with election officials and staff members then uncovering ballot boxes to begin counting votes and recording results in the presence of party agents and observers.
In this general elections, political parties across the country fielded a total of 1,565 Pyithu Hluttaw candidates for 315 Pyithu Hluttaw seats, 779 Amyotha Hluttaw candidates for 161 Amyotha Hluttaw seats, 3,112 regional Hluttaw candidates for 612 regional Hluttaw seats and 183 candidates for 29 ethnic representative seats. 87 political parties contested in the general elections. There were 37,268,876 eligible voters and 39,962 polling stations. The Union Election Commission will announce the official results in the coming days. —MNA
