March 7

The acreage of CP hybrid maize sees high yield in NyaungU Township, Mandalay Region. The price is up by K6,000 per 18-viss basket (a viss equals to 1.6 kg) during the current harvest season as against the year-ago period.

The CP maize is worth K15,000 per basket this year, whereas it fetches only K9,000 per basket. The growers of hybrid maize are generating a handsome profit at present.

“The local residents in the villages on both banks along the Ayeyawady River in NyaungU Township cultivate Virginia tobacco, beans and pulses, chrysanthemum, onions and sweet corns. The crops on alluvial soil are highly yielded. The CP maize was started to cultivate during Thadingyut period. They are offered higher price at the moment than those recorded in the same corresponding period last year,” a maize grower U Zaw Win from Letpanchaypaw village quoted in his sayings.

There are ten varieties of hybrid maize. They can be grown in winter and summer. The winter CP maize grows bigger than the summer ones. The CP hybrid maize is delivered to Pakokku market. The high price allows the growers to do well financially this year, said an owner of Nilar warehouse in Pakokku city.

Additionally, Thailand gives green light to maize imports through Mae Sot under zero tariff (with Form-D), between 1 February and 31 August.

From 1 February 2022, more than 100 trucks load of maize were conveyed to Thailand.
